Never kill spiders that know things

See what i mean.....

Poor me syndrome

I will be the first one to admit that most woman act crazy. We often act using just our emotions to guide us....we cry for no reason, we sometimes go off on mad rant about some totally irrelevant thing (or so we are told) and we obsess about the way we look...
Lets face it, some of us act crazy on a good day, so when PMS comes around we become completely irrational.

PMS (or what i like to call "Poor Me syndrome") is the wonderful time of the month where we are so hormonal, bloated and annoyed that we feel (no, we know) the whole world doesnt like us and thinks we are ugly.

I shall be the first to raise my hand "yes, i act crazy and irrational during PMS"

I can almost cry at anything. Most often at: Oprah, sad news stories, having nothing to wear, my boyfriend being so called "insensitive" and romantic movies. Its seems to be the best universal excuse for any insane behaviour, over eating and sobbing our little hearts out. Most woman throw countless pity parties and feel totally and utterly unloved.

(Men: please be warned attempting to call us crazy, mental or silly during this time will have a devastating result)

During PMS no matter what clothes i try on I will feel ugly and horribly chubby...my skin will be bad and no matter what a man does he is not going to get it 100% right...
SO, If you (or your man) think you are the only one getting cranky once a month, think again..

Heres some PMS facts:

*An estimated 75 percent of menstruating women experience some form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), according to the National Institutes of Health.

* PMS first described in 1931 as a "state of unbearable tension," a description most women can understand to a certain degree.

*Although it's possible to create a list of dozens and dozens of PMS symptoms, the most common are bloating/water retention and the resulting weight gain, breast tenderness and lumpiness, headaches, cramps, fatigue, irritability, mood swings, and anxiety.

* The exact cause of PMS isn't known
What can we do about it?

* Exercise- Lack of physical activity increases the risk of PMS. Also, Excess body weight has been shown to increase the symptoms of PMS.
* In addition to over-the-counter medications & herbal help, a variety of prescription drugs can be helpful in relieving or reducing PMS symptoms. These include birth control pills, diuretics ("water pills") and antidepressants (ONLY for severe PMS or PMDD).

*Some studies show that drinking tea and increasing carbohydrates during the weeks preceding menstruation is helpful. Try stay away from alcohol....but maybe buy some for your man so he can at least cope ;-)

* Large amounts of ice-cream, pizza and chocolate...?? Unfortunately not, apparently you have to try limit your sugar intake before your period.

*Give yourself space and don't expect to be Super Woman all the time. Take care of yourself first, even if it means that your husband or significant other has to cook dinner or wash the dishes.

* DONT make major decisions on your PMS days. Most decisions can wait until you are back to your normal, cheerful self.

FREE HUGS!

why don't you give someone a hug today, maybe even a stranger.....not only will it make them feel better but it will make you feel better too (hugs are scientifically proven to be good for your heart and overall health)

Today I was thinking about how many people really have noone to hug them and make them feel like the world is not such a bad place. I also thought about all the people I know and care about, but how I never give them as many hugs as I should.....sooo i decided i needed to hug more people.
Some people feel very strongly about hugging and have taken this simple act to a new level. One such person is Juan Mann. He started a free hug campaign in 1994. Since its start thousands of people have made "free hugs" boards.
If standing on the street waiting to give out hugs is not your thing, my suggestion is that you should make a "hug list" and try hug some of the people on it (sure, some of the people you may not be able to get to - but write them down anyway).

Below I decided to draw up a quick "hug list" of my own:

1. The man who sells the Big Issue mag at the traffic lights near my house. I see him everyday and no matter what he is smiling and making jokes. He makes me smile when i see him and that deserves a hug.
2. All the victims of Xenophobia in South Africa right now. Some of them have lost everything and for no reason except they are not South African.
3. A polar bear - as they just made the endangered species list
4. A tree - because without them we are in serious trouble
5. My family & friends - I am so thankful for them
6. My boyf - any reason to touch him more ;)
7. YOU - because you took the time to read my blog, thanks.

....and if you cant reach out and hug someone literally, send them a virtual hug....it may still give that warm fuzzy feeling on the other end....
Happy hugging!!!

Poem

This poem is by the Russian poet, Yevgeny Yevtushenko.
It is one of my favourites poems. It is so beautiful and honest.

Colors

When your face
appeared over my crumpled life
at first I understood
only the poverty of what I have.
Then its particular light
on woods, on rivers, on the sea,
became my beginning in the coloured world
in which I had not yet had my beginning.
I am so frightened, I am so frightened,
of the unexpected sunrise finishing,
of revelations
and tears and the excitement finishing.
I don't fight it, my love is this fear,
I nourish it who can nourish nothing,
love's slipshod watchman.
Fear hems me in.
I am conscious that these minutes are short
and that the colours in my eyes will vanish
when your face sets.

Betty or Veronica?

Do you remember Archie comics?
Jeepers, back in the day those were the best comics.

Archie was actually quite a player. He could never decide which girl he really liked better - Sweet Betty or super rich Veronica (both were equally hot)

I think every girl (and guy) had their favourite.

I always wanted Betty to get the guy as Veronica was just so bitchy and thought she could have anyone and anything.

If Betty and Veronica were real life TV stars now I think Veronica would probably be seen as the more empowered minx, while Betty would have been the "girl next door". Veronica would surely be miss popularity with her money, mansion, butler, confidence and clothes. Humble Betty would be the champion for girls who want to be more natural and wholesome.

Dont you just see it now, Veronica dressed in stunning designer clothes, Jimmy choo shoes, climbing out of the "only- in- your- dreams" car... while Betty arrives in a Toyota with jeans and a t-shirt (personally im more a Betty myself). To stay true to the comic Betty and Veronica would have to be friends, hang in the same group and like the same guy (though we all know Veronica is destined to be with ego monster, Reggi)

Archie would be a hard character to cast. You would have to find a red haired guy with freckles that was attractive enough to have both woman fighting over him.

Blow the candles out, Make a wish

Birthdays are great because on the one hand is a brilliant excuse to get your way, get drunk and get presents, But on the other hand its a time for reflection, "new year" resolutions and getting older.

Well, its my birthday tomorrow and I will admit i am having some mixed feelings about getting older.

I thought at 28 I would be alot more sorted out, i would be more settled, , have alot more cash.....
30 is staring straight at me (and winking) , im seeing little wrinkles (i like to call them smile lines), I cant just eat anything i want and my biological clock alarm is starting to go off every now and then (Damn, off button just isnt working anymore).

Having said all that i still know if a magical fairy popped up today and said she could take me back to 21 again I would have to refuse.

For all the flaws that come with age, I have found there are even more blessings.
I am much wiser, far more comfortable with myself, I look after myself more, i have found real love (far better than the whimsical infatuations of my youth), I have more independence, I am taken more seriously and I am very happy....

and I guess that is really the best birthday present a girl can ask for (ok, that and a pretty diamond ring..ha ha ha).
:)
When i blow out my candles this year I only have one wish..that things keep getting better with age (ok fine, I have two - that i get very very drunk at my party...yipppee!!!).

Where is a Starbucks when you need one?

This morning i feel like a Starbucks Mocha Frappucino.
Look at the picture..mmmm..you want one now, dont you?

People, South Africa needs Starbucks....

You bought your license where?

I was merrily on my way to work when my boyf called me. He had forgotten his camera and asked me if i was still at home. I was not. I thought here is a great oppurtunity to be "super gilfriend", so I offered to go and get it. I turned my car around minutes from work and headed to the flat.

Unfortuantely i was unlucky and got some very annoying traffic and a batch of bad drivers as i went on my mission.

First I had to slam on my brakes behind some person who seemed to think i was not behind him. After that I got stuck behind a lady that was driving so slow that i became convinced it was on purpose. Every couple of seconds she would glance at me in the rear view mirror with a silly little smirk in her eyes...
I then got stuck in a long line of cars because there was a "road- fixing-tractor- machine- thingy" (not its real name, but it will have to do) crossing the road. Then i had some idiot in a Jaguar stop half way in the road where i needed to turn.

After all that the mission went a bit better with only the occassional, demented taxi driver cutting in front of me and a few clueless pedestrians.

Finally, I delivered the camera safely to boyf and saved the day! Well, kinda...

Drink me

Such pretty bottles and they have alcohol in them too...... Cocktail anyone?

The company that makes these is called Integrity Spirits.

Magazine Bliss

* I absolutely adore Real Simple Magazine. I get one every month and devour it. The magazine really has inspired, simple decor and food ideas (hence, the name).
* My wonderful friend in UK has sent me a few copies of British Vogue.

Sure, its 90% advertising and 100% out of my price range - but I definitely see it as more of an art magazine than a realistic shopping guide (i mean please - does anyone really wear most of that stuff out?)

Vogue is great for getting some much needed fashion inspiration and its also great photo inspiration for my boyf (yup, he is multi talented -a photo and IT guy - aint i lucky!)

I think i shall try start a collection....

Most wanted - Apple MacBook air

My most wanted item of this week has to be the new Apple MacBook air. Its so thin it fits into a envelope.....crazy stuff....

Its about $2000 - So, I dont think I will be getting one of these for a while.

Im not a huge gadget junkie (that role i leave to my brillaint IT boyf) but even i know a beautiful, "must have" gadget when i see it :)

Seeking Summer

Cape Town is not exactly built for winter. In fact, I dont think many capetonians would mind if winter never ever came. Some people are in deep denial when the rainy season actually arrives, even in 16 C ( laugh if you want "snowy cities" but that is chilly to us) I still see Cape Town people attempting to wear shorts and flip flops.

I am one of few that actually enjoys the winter months. I jump at the oppurtunity to cover up and drag out all my scarfs and beanies. Ahhh...winter..a chance to feel good about my lily white skin...but there are only so many movies you can watch, boots you can buy, malls you can visit and hot chocolate you can drink...... alas, even i can admit that cape town becomes a wee bit quiet in the winter time...

Sooooo back to my original point - Cape Town was not built for winter....this is seen in the fact that there is definitely not as much to do in winter. Unlike London and New York (to names a few great winter cities), Cape Town has not got a warm coffee shops on every corner, pubs and nice dry undergrounds to travel on. Instead we have Beaches, outdoor bars and stunning coastlines.....in short, Cape Town (like all the great beach cities of the world) is ill equipped for winter entertainment.

(Note: Ok, sure.....we do only have winter for about 3- 4 months of the year and it doesnt get cold enough to snow but still for some the lack of good quality sun is traumatic. lol)

Not surprising then that at the first sign of sun here most people head outside to make a braai or just lay about like lazy lizards in the UV rays....

What should cape town do about this??

I think we should create our own indoor beach (thanks Japan, great idea!) with a place for people to braai happily indoors (oh and dont forget the cool fake summer sky)...that way all us Capetonians suffering from the "winter blues" can live in denial and have our "endless summer".

Poem

ON HOLD

Somehow i am lost for words, for you, me and us
the days grow shorter and my patience longer
and i crave a dark room and a candle to waste time in

will you come to me now?
Is the moment right and the time now?
will i ask these questions until age has ravaged me?

For now i sit and i breathe what I can of you in
and i burn your face into my mind
I am not yet taken, but waiting
and my heart is on hold - when you are ready

by me

Movie review - Juno

Geez, Banana!
Even at the risk of joining the herd, i shall admit that "Juno" is probably the best movie I have seen this year (well...so far)

The script writer is a former nobody, ex-stripper named Diablo Cody and if thats not enough to make you want to see it, the cast and quirky music are brilliant. This "little" teen pregnancy movie delivers the right amount of originality, quirkiness and humour to make this a cult classic.
I laughed so hard at Juno's wit and sarcasm, I almost choked on my popcorn.

This is definitely a Dvd I want to own.

My favourite part of the movie: Well there were so many ...... definitely a bunch of quote worthy lines that may be stolen and put into our ever growing "pop culture".
I'll leave you with this quote from the part where Juno meets the potential adoptive parents (thanks to IMDB) -
Vanessa Loring: You think you're really going to do this?
Juno MacGuff: Yea, if I could just have the thing and give it to you now, I totally would. But I'm guessing it looks probably like a sea monkey right now and we should let it get a little cuter. Vanessa Loring: That's great.
Mark Loring: Keep it in the oven.

:)
