Well said, Billy

"You may be right, I may be crazy, But it just may be a lunatic you're looking for.”- Billy Joel

Just gotta love the above song lyric.

So, Ive been a bit bored at work the last week or so. Ok, maybe bored is the wrong word, unchallenged is a better description. Somedays are much better than others, while other days drag on for an eternity. Im not really sure what is up with this vibe..but it needs to stop because its making me feel crazier than i usually do. I've actually found myself eagerly awaiting my study books.....My, oh my, how things have changed.

Yesterday (during a moment of feeling rather unchallenged) I felt compelled to do 3 quizzes all basically entitled" Which city should you live in". You may ask why three? Well, i dont trust the opinion of one quiz, it may have been rigged. Anyway, guess which city all the quizzes said I should live in? mmmmmm..........and the answer is: PARIS. Yup, apparently i should be saying Bon voyage and jetting off to the land of frogs and snails. I was quite surprised, as a year ago those quizzes said New York. Click here to take one of the quizzes.

Ive decided to go on the "cup-a-soup" diet. For two reasons:
1. Lately, I have been eating like a prized pig getting ready for a competition and 2. I would rather eat interesting food in Dubai than waste money on fancy food right now.
I'm going to try having a "cup-a-soup" for lunch today. I dont know if i will enjoy it, but its worth a try.

*Please note: Cape Town is never an option on the "which city should I live in" quizzes. so I dont think these quizzes are to be believed AND the "cup-a-soup" diet is not a real diet......yet.

My tuna recipe

I am not a brillaint cook yet. I am still very much a domestic goddess "in-training". At the moment I am trying to improve on my over used boring recipes and learning to make some new yummy dishes to impress The Boyf.

Today i shall share my tuna pasta. If you are looking for a recipe that is relatively cheap and easy - Try it (let me know what you think):

What you will need:

- 2 x cans of chunk tuna (preferably in water)
- 1 x can of mushroom soup (condensed) or mushroom pasta sauce
- fresh white mushrooms (I would say I add about 10, but you can use more or less)
- 1 x big onion
- 1 x packet pasta (i like shell pasta)
- Cheese (i like cheddar)
- Salt
- Pepper
- Garlic and herb seasoning
- May need a little Milk (depending on sauce/soup you use)
- White wine (i like chardonnay) - to drink with dinner - you can also use a bit in sauce

Making it:

* Dice up onion and slice up mushrooms.
*Put olive oil in a pan and heat. Once oil is heated add onions. Cook onions until almost about to brown and then add mushrooms. Cook onions and mushrooms until browned on high heat.
* Add 2 cans of drained tuna and cook for a minute on med heat.
* Add condensed mushroom soup/sauce and stir constantly on medium heat.
**NOTE: if soup/sauce is too thick just add some milk until you get the right consistency
* Add a little white wine now, if you want to (just a tiny pour). Increase heat. Stir sauce until just boiling. Once boiling take sauce off heat.
* Add salt and pepper, garlic & herb spice (if you want). Stir everything together. Place back on cooled oven and allow to simmer on very low heat.
* Cook pasta (in boiling water, with pinch of salt until soft)
* Once pasta is cooked, drain pasta. Then place pasta in a bowl/plate and put some tuna sauce over it.
* Grate cheese over pasta & sauce....and TA DAAAA...you hopefully have yummy looking tuna pasta

Eat and enjoy with a glass or two of white wine ;-)

Must be Monday

I swear time is speeding up and its beginning to freak me out. Just yesterday it was friday......well, it feels like it anyway.

The morning has been sloth-like. Im still in a half asleep state. I like it, its like a pretty little haze inside my head. Im about to have a cup of coffe though , which I am convinced will violently jolt me from my la la land.

The weekend was a few things, mainly: tipsy, delicious, too quick and full of attitude (mainly mine).

Saturday night The Boyf and I went to Twinkle & her future hubby's flat warming. It was a cool night. By the end people were getting hysterically funny, for some reason Twinkle was posing for pictures with dishwashing liquid and I had heard some very weird stories about fruit.

On Sunday The Boyfs sister treated us to the most awesome roast lunch (and a few yummy glasses of red wine). It was one of those meals that makes you feel the need to undo the top button on your jeans and take a nap.

I have been in a bit of an unacceptable mood lately and i think its because I dont really take criticism well. Its taken me a while to admit to this fact, mainly because I dont like being wrong about things (awful, i know). I have decided to take steps to being better at taking criticism- Hi, My name is BB and I need an attitude adjustment.

In random news: I drove past a burning building in Cape Town this morning. Its weird how everyone wants to watch some drama. People were lined up on the road just to watch smoke (you couldnt see much else). When I got to work I was amused at how many conversations began like this : "Morning, did you see the burning building?". Clearly nothing interesting has happened around here for a while.

Wild Thaaang Thursday

Yesterday - I didnt post anything (anyone notice?). I thought i'd go through withdrawels if i didnt blog for one whole day , but apparently not. I didnt really have any reason for not blogging, I actually just didnt feel like it. I think this is progress in taking control back from the blog addiction.

Right now- I am sitting at my desk with a half eaten packet of Oreos and a few sips of coffee left in my mug. Today I feel I have the right to commit some "food sins" as i already went to gym twice this week and both times were in the morning (applause please).

Dinner disaster -Last night i had my heart set on chicken stir-fry with some wonderful cambodian -pineapple- lemon grass sauce BUT instead I ended up making "Chicken Mate" for dinner. I was highly unimpressed with the grocery shop for not having any stir fry mix and making me buy "Chicken Mate" out of desperation ( Ok fine, i didnt have to buy it, but i was feeling sorry for myself and i had chicken already). The Chicken mate was not too bad. Though it would have been better if i had washed it down with a bottle of wine.

Random comment - Today a girl walked past my desk and jokingly called me "Wild Thaang"....I think she may have been referring to the ultra bodied, wavy hair look (maybe i should have brushed it). Well, it could be worse, she could have called me "cave woman" or "bush girl". At least "Wild Thaang" sounds fiesty and kind of dangerous...heeheee

Bye -Have a fabulous Thursday, stunning blog readers...friday is thankfully almost here

Great lyrics

I was first introduced to Dashboard Confessional during my stay in California about 5 years ago. The band is led by singer-songwriter, guitarist and only reason for band, Chris Carrabba (pictured above). I've always felt like this bands lyrics express things you wish or want to say.

I've never been a band groupie, but if i planned to be one I think this band would be pretty high on my list of "bands to stalk". Ive never got to see them live (grrr..sore point, i got lost on the way to San Diego Street Scene and missed them) but i've heard their concerts are pretty cool as everyone in the audience sings along the whole time. Next time I get the oppurtunity i will be there singing along too. If you have never heard D.C - go take a listen.

Here are some of my favourite lyrics:

My hopes are so high,
that your kiss might kill me.
So won't you kill me,
so I die happy.
My heart is yours to fill or burst,
to break or bury,Or wear as jewelery, whichever you prefer.” - Hands down by D.C

"I amVindicated,
I am selfish,
I am wrong,
I am right,
I swear I'm right,
Swear I knew it all along
And I am flawed,
but I am cleaning up so well,
I am seeing in me now the things you swore you saw yourself"-Vindicated by D.C

Current addictions

* Chinese sweet & sour chicken -
One night my friend Twinkle convinced me to order from Dynasty Chinese Restaurant ( i'm usually a bit apprehensive when trying a chinese restaurant for the first time). Now i can't seem to get enough of their sweet and sour chicken. Its so very very delicious.
* My bathrobe -
Its so warm, soft, fluffy and white. Its like wearing a non-sticky marshmallow. I would wear it to work if i could.
* How I met your mother -
I love, love, Loooove this show. Its legen...wait for it....dary!
*Hugs from The Boyf -
The Boyf gives the bestest hugs (Seriously, I think he would take the gold in the hugging olympics). I find myself craving them all through my day. I just could never ever hug him enough.
*My Blog -
Yup, im still highly addicted to my blog. Can't you tell :)

Monday mumblings

Grrrr...Its monday again. The weekend rushed by and I must admit me and The boyf have been a bit hermit like lately. I have no doubt that once we get back from Dubai we will have to have a night of partying. Im actually starting to crave a very tipsy, Cape Town, dancing night. heehee.

I watched "Tombstone" this weekend, and while I am not a great fan of westerns I totally enjoyed this film. Val Kilmer was brilliant as Doc Holiday. The film left me wondering how i can use the phrase "I'm your Huckleberry" in my everyday conversations.

We used to have the cutest dog alive (ok i may be biased) He used to move his little puppy pillow bed around so it was always in the sunny spots. This weekend i tried to do the same with the couch. Moments after finding a great sunny spot I was passed out on the couch and drooling. Damn, that was a very clever little dog. I miss him.

HAPPY 90th BIRTHDAY, MADIBA!

Nelson Mandela is 90 today. He has done so much for South Africa and I won't even begin to express how awesome, inspiring and respected he is.

Happy Birthday, Madiba...may you live to be at least a 100!

Study time for me

Today my boss approved the diploma course I want to do. So now at least i know my company will be funding it and i cant use lack of money as an excuse to put it off any longer. The course is going to take me at least a year and i actually have to write exams.....*GASP*

Its a correspondence course and thats fabulous, but its still rather daunting.
Ive been out of school for quite a while now, so i am struggling with the concept of studying again and having homework everyday.
I have to wonder -do i have the discipline? Will I be able to keep procrastination and A.D.D from getting in my way? Well, I guess i am going to find out.
Wish me luck :)

John & Johnny

John and Johnny have to be my all time favourite male actors from the 80's and 90's

I'm a huge John Cusack fan. John Cusack still acts in and produces great movies today, but I must admit i still love watching him in his 80's films. In the 80's he always seemed to play the quirky guy trying to get the girl - and you couldnt help liking him.

Heres are my two absolute favourite 1980's Cusack films:
Better Off Dead(1985) and Say Anything (1989)

Johnny Depp is undoubtedly one of the best actors in the world. His unconventional film choices keep suprising me and keep him from being type cast.

Heres are my favourite 1990's Depp films:

from top left: Cry baby (1990); Whats Eating Gilbert Grape (1993); Benny and Joon (1993); Edward Scissorhands (1990); Don Juan DeMarco (1995); Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998).

Almost time to fly

The month of August is fast approaching and this means its almost time for The Boyf and I to take our first overseas trip together (Hooray!!!). We are off to Dubai for 4 insanely hot days (minds out of the gutter people, I mean 50 degrees Celsius kind of hot)

I’m determined to have a brilliant holiday and enjoy whatever comes my way (I’m holding thumbs its not a herd of crazed camels). Theres only one thing i am already not looking forward to - the flying part of the trip.

I think there is something so unnatural and unnerving about being in a plane, cramped with a hundred other people, eating small portions of food, watching a movie on a tiny screen while being thousands of feet above the ground and travelling at a super-duper fast speed.

Sure the people in first class have it slightly better with their reclining chairs and food on pretty plates....but please who are they really kidding, we are all still on the same plane, we all still have to fly 10 hours.

I personally think airplanes should be fitted with spaceship like pods, that the airline feeds sleeping gas into it. That way you can just blissfully sleep through the whole ordeal and don’t have to listen to what anyone else is saying. (Once I heard a guy saying "Does anyone else smell smoke?" ..grrrrr....Lets just say that after that sleeping was not an option).

I've always wished i could drink more alcohol when i flew, at least then i could take the edge off the anxiety. Only thing is I always seem to fly alone so i worry about embarrassing myself, unintentionally harassing people or passing out on the stranger next to me. Thankfully The Boyf will be with me this time so finally i can knock a few drinks back and happily drool on his shoulder.

Despite having to fly, I'm positive this will be a very memorable trip. Can’t wait to get "snappy happy", check out indoor skiing, have dinner in the desert, see the amazing modern architecture and hopefully get a bit of colour on my glowing white skin.

;-)

Just another Monday

I have decided I am not a Monday blogger. In fact, I was seriously thinking about going on a a blogging strike until Tuesday. Of course I messed that up by blogging about the fact that i may go on a monday blogging strike on...*gasp*.... Monday...Damn!

Oh well, guess i seem to be a Monday blogger after all, but dont expect me to be a happy blogger on Mondays...that would just be pushing it.

Blogging

So i started my blog 3 months ago ( it seems way longer to me).

One thing people dont tell you when you start blogging is how bloody addictive it can be. Maybe when you join a blog site there should be some kind of warning label - "WARNING: blogging can be addictive, can cause anti-social behaviour and in severe cases can cause the blogger to cease doing any work".

When you start blogging you start looking at things with new eyes and find yourself constantly wondering if things are "blog worthy". Ive gotten very into my blogging and im enjoying it so much I naturally expect my loved ones to read it daily and love it as much as me (Yes, This delusion is just another side effect of blogging).
Just the other day i had a conversation with The Boyf, it went something like this:

TB: Hey honey , how was your day?
Me: I guess you didnt read my blog?
TB: No, Im sorry i didnt have time.
Me: Ok, but you should have read my blog
TB: Hun, you can always tell me what your blog said.
Me: I think you should go and read my blog now. Its not the same if i tell you
TB: Ok.......

I am finding that the blogger world is a rather strange and new place to suddenly belong to. Some days you kind of think to yourself "why am doing this?", "Will anyone read this?" and "what the hell should i write about today?"

I mean, there are literally millions of blogs online. Bloggers write about anything and everything from celebrity gossip blogs to Sci-fi geek blogs..theres nothing you can't write or read about.

You very quickly start to realise your blog is just one little piece of candy in the worlds biggest candy store. All of a sudden you feel like you are back in junior school and this is a popularity contest?? (Pick me , Pick me, !) and you seriously wonder if anyone will actually read your drunk adventures, latest tuna recipe, your thoughts on global warming or see your new homemade Battlestar Galactica outfit?

All these thoughts got me feeling a little annoyed. So, to make myself feel better i sat The boyf down and had a little chat about blogs, blogging and all things blog...He quickly pointed out that I was seriously over analysing this blogging thing and may be a bit too obsessive about it. I must admit he may be right.

After the chat i felt a little better and and realised two important things:

1. It doesnt matter if noone reads my blog
2. That I should blog about all this

:)

Money to burn

Last night I watched Forbes list of the 20 richest people under 25. It was sickening.Ok , fine I was green with envy. I was literally sitting there watching the show with my mouth open. I mean one boy owned about 34 cars.....seriously, thats just wrong.

Suprisingly the top 4 people on the list were athletes. Topping the list was basketball player LeBron James, who is only 22. He earned a staggering 23 million dollars between 2006 - 2007. Most of his fortune comes from endorsements.

Its pretty hard for me to imagine having that kind of money at any age. I think when you get to the point where you are earning that much money you really can have anything you want. Its interesting to see how people with that much money choose to spend it. Some people spend it all on material items for themselves and their loved ones, while other people try to make the world better.

One person who really tries to use her money for good is Oprah. She earns so much money now that she gives everyone in her audience a free car or something cool everytime she feels like it. Even with all her gift giving Oprah still gets richer by the hour. Shes not the only one getting rich off her fame though, she also helps other people get rich. Just by being on her show people start to earn more money and sometimes even get their own shows (Yes, Dr. Phil, Im talking about you). Oprah has everything a person could ever want , but she seems grounded and tries to put her money to good use by helping people less fortunate than herself. Suprisingly she has never gone all "Jolie" on us by adopting lots of "3rd world" children.

Watching forbes last night made me think that i really need to sit down and pen that bestselling novel that i know must be hiding somewhere inside me (come out , come out wherever you are). Maybe then i can make it onto Oprahs book club list and be set for life.....
But until that happens I will just have to work harder, pray, dream bigger and maybe buy a few lottery tickets (just covering all my bases)

:)

Do you truly believe in aliens, UFO's, abductions and Area 51??? Well then you will love this lamp.

You can buy this abduction lamp with either a cow (below) or a human being abducted.

Somewhere in the world a sci-fi geek is ordering this right now.

Give a little warmth

The weather has been awful and rainy here in Cape Town. Maybe you think you have it bad because your car is parked 10 minutes away from your office or you have a leak in your roof at home.....

Now give a thought to those people who dont even have proper homes, warm clothes and who are literally left out in the cold during winter.

A few things you can do to help?

1.
I looked online and discovered that The Dis-Chem Foundation (with the help of 5FM and 3Talk) are again helping people to give the gift of warmth to people in need. The Dis-Chem Foundation is doing their annual collection of warm things (blankets, hot water bottles, herseys etc..). Dump bins will be placed in all Dis-Chem stores nationally for you to drop your winter woolies and leave a bit of warm cheer May 25th until the end of July 2008. Every week the Dis-Chem Foundation will collect, sort and distribute all items to charities throughout South Africa.

Just click here to find your nearest Dis-chem store

2.
You can donate a blanket, a tin of food or whatever you can spare to Good Hope FM Keep Cape Town Warm campaign. Click here for more info.

3.
One Love Street peoples project is a non-profit organisation which was formed to address the needs to street children and homeless adults living in Cape Town City Centre. They began as a feeding project but have evolved in assisting not only street children but the greater street community.

The One Love building is used as a drop-off centre where people may donate blankets, clothing and dry goods e.g. rice, lentils etc.

Visit them here to see where they are located and find out other ways you can help.

*
Note: There are alot of organisations in Cape Town I havent mentioned. Most can be found on the internet.

TGIF

I slid out of my bed this morning like a slow moving swamp creature. I then contemplated crawling to the bathroom, but i was afraid I might just fall asleep on the ground. I have no drunken night to blame for this feeling, just too many episodes of "Heroes" and late night ghost pops munching. All I can say is Thank God its Friday (TGIF).

Ive already had a few cups of coffee today and I am feeling unnaturally alert. I think my eyes must be as big as saucers. My co-workers keep looking at me strangely, but i reckon thats just because I keep randomly singing little tunes and shouting out "Hello there"when someone walks by. All the sugar I am consuming is also really helping my mood...I am on some kind of super perky caffeine-sugar high. I have a feeling the come down will not be pretty. Next week I am going to try not to eat sugar (I said TRY, this isnt a promise)

I have a hair appointment tomorrow and I dont know why but i am nervous. I'm going to a hairdresser I have never been to and this could go very well or very, very badly. I have loathed and despised my hair for the last few weeks. Its been all fluffy and has regrowth. I know i have to do something before I grab the boyfs clippers. I am thinking of crossing back into the light, but i am afraid i will miss the dark. Oh well, I will just have to go red if I cant decide on blonder or browner.

Hmm....Tonight I am thinking I would like some greasy, dodgy chinese food. My friend, Twinkle, made me eat some the other night and since then all I have been craving is sweet and sour chicken.
*
To all you precious people who actually read my ramblings, Have a fabulous weekend!

Go play outside

Most of us spend so much time in front of our computers and TV that we seldom get outside anymore. In this age of computer games, dstv, cellphones and the internet people find very little reason to venture outdoors. I mean what for, right? There are no plug points and no electricity out there?

Today I would like to challenge you (and myself) to do something almost unheard of in this day and age. For one whole day every week (if you are really brave try the whole weekend) leave your computer, TV and game console turned off
(i know, crazy talk).

Yup, this means no checking your e-mail, no checking your facebook, no computer games,No surfing the web (not even on your phone), no blogging and no TV .
Instead of staying indoors go and watch a sunrise/sunset, go take a boat ride, go to the park, go to the beach, go read in your garden, have a family picnic, go walk up a mountain. If its too rainy where you are - go to an art gallery or museum, bake something, make something, paint something, go and splash in some puddles.

I think our parents had the right idea when they scolded us for wasting our time indoors and loudly told us to "GO play outside!"

Current addictions

In the last 7 days I've felt addicted to:

* My blog -
I dont know why I didnt start a blog years ago.A big thanks to the boyf for often suggesting I should have one.I wonder how long it will take before the novelty of it wears off or I run out of things to write about?
*Coffee (yup, Ive started drinking it again) -
My recent coffee request: Can I have an espresso? Make that a double. Actually do you make triples?? You dont...hmmm..in that case can i have two doubles.
*Heroes tv series -
I have the second season and its AWESOME!!! It would be cool to have some real super powers...at the moment the only power I have is the power to make all my money dissapear at a lightning fast speed ;-)
*Vitamins -
Im on a quest to take more vitamins, so I have started buying lots. Just yesterday I bought salmon oil (omega 3) and evening primrose tablets. Maybe today I will buy some vitamin c....If this addiction doesnt stop I may have my own herbal pharmacy by friday.
* Morning snoozing -
I cannot get up in the morning. My bed holds me hostage and I can't break free of my duvet. My arm just barely makes it out to hit the snooze button. Thats my story and I am sticking to it.

Mayday! Mayday!..abandon ship

I live in South Africa and I am not sure whether to be really proud or annoyed by that fact right now....Lately when I watch the news headlines or a political program I am often left thinking "What the !@%&# is everyone on???"

I dont want to criticize my own country but if you live here you realise quickly we have very real problems. Even putting poverty, petty crime, inflation and petrol prices aside, we still have plenty of problems that are too big to just go away quickly (or go away at all)

I realise the world is an imperfect place, So I can bring myself to deal with some issues like: evil Eskom, the climbing petrol price, petty crimes, affirmative action, insane taxi drivers, hundreds of parking guards taking my money and our country wasting money on giant stadiums.................BUT I can not deal with: increased hijackings, corrupt leaders, sensless murders & violence, rapes, being scared of walking down the street at night, 1 out of 10 people having AIDS, So much home security that we begin to trap ourselves and total ignorance.

All this leads me to ask the question: Is South Africa a sinking ship? and if so when do I abandon ship and swim over to more "first world" shores? Or do I just stay with the ship even if its going down and hope that eventually a new ship will come along and save us all?

Even with so much doubt and frustration swirling around my head I always am left thinking "Theres no place like home"....*sigh*
